Conquering dental fear and anxiety with sedation dentistry
Sedation dentistry is an option for patients who suffer from dental fear, anxiety, gag reflexes and many other emotional feelings that come along with a visit to the dentist. Sedation dentistry can accompany most dental procedures from dental cleanings to extractions and dental implants. With dental sedation patients will feel more relaxed and less ‘aware’ of the procedure. This is why some patients chose to have their dental procedure performed under sedation to be less conscious of what is happening.
How is sedation dentistry administered?
At Sudbury Smiles we offer oral sedation. The patient receives medication in pill form and will enter a dreamlike sleepiness. In many cases patients will come out of the sedated state with minor amnesia of the procedure performed. Patients are able to go home following dental sedation. They cannot drive or make any major decisions for the rest of the day and must be accompanied by a responsible adult. The medicine wears off after several hours, however the patient may feel groggy for the remainder of the day.
