Periodontal disease can also have an impact on overall health being linked to cardiovascular problems and diabetes. Periodontal disease is preventable and early detection is key to successful treatment.

Signs of gum disease

In a regular dental check-up the hygienist will check for signs of periodontal disease using a probe. See videos below for more information.

Symptoms of the periodontics include:

  • Swollen puffy gums
  • Bright red or purplish gums
  • Receding gums
  • Spaces between the teeth
  • Loose teeth
  • Sensitive teeth
  • Bad breath
  • Bad taste in your mouth

If you are experiencing any of the above symptoms it is recommended to see you dentist to create a treatment plan to maintain good oral health and prevent periodontal disease from creating any further damage.
